Talent retention
It's a new day. Lansing employers are transitioning to knowledge-based economy, building a youthful creative class and retaining new, talented professionals is a critical factor. What does that mean for Lansing? We need students. What do students need? Jobs, jobs, jobs. So let's put them to work!
By increasing student awareness of Lansing's professional, cultural, and entertainment opportunities, Lansing will secure a vibrant, active future economy of fresh young professionals. The Lansing area's key assets in attaining this goal? Three higher education institutions in a 3 mile radius, of course! What we, as a city, region, and state need you to answer is: What is the future of your business and how can students and emerging professionals be incorporated into your plan?
Things to consider as an employer:
- Do you have entry level positions?
- Do you provide internship opportunities?
- Do you have opportunities to engage college students as volunteers?
- What have you learned professionally that's valuable to pass on to our next generation of the labor force?
- Why do you and/or your employees choose to live and/or work in Lansing?
The plethora of educational opportunities for young adults in Lansing is apparent, but we need the help of businesses and employers to provide, enhance, and communicate the professional and lifestyle opportunities to retain the future workers of Lansing. Mayor Virg Bernero's 2007 Linking Lansing & U Initiative instigated regional interest in weaving students and emerging professionals into the economic fiber of Michigan's Capital City. As Lansing continues to emerge as a fabulous entertainment and cultural destination, it is time to showcase the city (and state!) as the trendy urban space it has become for our future entrepreneurs, business and civic leaders.
