In 2014, Mayor Bernero and Bishop David Maxwell – the director of his Office of Community and Faith-Based Initiatives— brought together existing community groups to help spearhead the “Mayor’s Young Lansing” Commission and Partnerships (MY Lansing CAP).
The formation of this community partnership resulted from President Obama’s “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative, a challenge to the nation to produce better results for young men (and women) of color by increasing graduation and employment rates while reducing incarceration and health care costs.
The MY Lansing initiative encourages candid dialogues and a greater sense of responsibility among community leaders— including young people themselves— to put local youth in a position to thrive, regardless of their race, gender, or socio-economic status. Through collective action, our partners have convened several events including “It Takes a Village”, “Prayer 4 Peace”, and “Saving Our Sons”. Combined these events have had over 2000 people in attendance. MY Lansing now has over 95 organizational partners and over 300 families who are the experts informing and driving the initiative.
