Unaccepted Items (please do not put in green recycling cart)

Recycle Right! Help reduce contamination in Lansing’s recycling stream by learning more about materials that should and shouldn’t be put into your CART recycling bin.

Common unaccepted items: 

These are some of the most common contaminants, not a comprehensive list of all unacceptable items. Please only recycle items shown on the recycling guidelines.

  • Plastic bags or plastic wrap of any kind (recyclables in plastic bags will be thrown away)
  • Scrap metal 
  • Styrofoam containers
  • Plastic or Wire hangers
  • Window panes, mirrors, ceramics and Pyrex dishware
  • Organic material and food waste
  • Electronic waste (batteries, cell phones and computers)
  • Paint, pesticides, oil and cleaners
  • Waxed cardboard
  • Needles or syringes
  • #3 plastics
  • Construction materials (drywall, wood, etc.)

Alternate Recycling Options:

Plastic Bags

Plastic grocery bags can be taken back to most retail stores, such as Meijer, Kroger, Target and Walmart. The recycling drop off center at MSU also accepts clean plastic bags.

Light Bulbs

Burnt-out CFL and LED light bulbs can be disposed of at many area locations. For a complete list of sites, view this directory from the Lansing Board of Water and Light.  

Household Hazardous Waste

The Ingham County Health Department offers free collection of oil-based paint, gasoline, household cleaners and other types of hazardous materials.

Polystyrene (styrofoam)

East Lansing Department of Public Works, located at 1800 E. State Road. This drop-off site is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
