COVID-19 Impact on CART

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Lansing will be making temporary changes to the Capital Area Recycling & Trash (CART) and yard waste collection services.

Yard Waste

Yard waste collection was originally scheduled to begin the week of April 13, 2020. This date is listed in the latest issue of the Lansing Living magazine, which was printed before the "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Executive Order was issued.

Curbside Collection:
Curbside collection of yard waste resumed again for the season on Monday, May 4, 2020. However, due to the large amount of yard waste that was already at the curbside in addition to the late start because of COVID-19, collection is slower than usual and is not necessarily guaranteed to happen on a resident's regularly scheduled day.

With the intent of stabilizing collection schedules, CART started transitioning to "every other week" collection on Monday, June 15, 2020. This means that going forward until the fall, yard waste collection will be on the same day as a resident's recycling collection. To learn more about this transition and/or to locate your collection day, please visit the Curbside Collection page.

Recycling & Trash

  • Trash bags must be contained inside of their blue cart with the lid closed in order to be picked up. This also applies to CART customers with the 95-gallon cart option.
  • Recyclable items must be contained inside of their green cart with the lid closed in order to be picked up, as well.
  • Simple Recycling (the orange bags for clothing, textiles and other household goods) is temporarily suspended.
  • Bulk item collection (items over 30 pounds and longer than four feet in length) is temporarily suspended until further notice.
