Hiring Process

The City of Lansing Fire Department has multiple steps to the hiring process. Candidates are evaluated at each step in the process and may or may not progress to the next step. The City of Lansing has the right to change this process at any time.

1. Application Process

Applications are only accepted online during open application periods.Applications can be found on lansingmi.gov/jobs as they become available.

2. ACT WorkKeys Assessment Test

The ACT WorkKeys assessment test is proctored by the Lansing Capital Area Michigan Works. This test is only administered after candidates are notified that they have met the minimum requirements of the current job posting. The candidate is tested in three areas: Observation, Applied Math, and Locating Information. More information may on this test may be found online.

3. Lansing Fire Department Physical Ability Test

The full physical ability test is a timed event consisting of eight evolutions, or exercises, which represent typical fire ground evolutions.

4. Interview

The interview process may consist of one or more interviews with a panel and/or the Fire Chief.

If the candidate successfully completes the selection process, a conditional offer of employment may be extended. Terms of the conditional offer include a City of Lansing background check, pre-employment physical to determine if essential functions of the job can be performed with or without reasonable accommodation and drug/alcohol screening. Conditional offers may be withdrawn at any time contingent upon testing. Final offers of employment will be extended to candidates that complete all phases with the approval of the City of Lansing administration.
