54-A District Court Celebrates 50th Anniversary

54-A District Court Celebrates 50th Anniversary

“People’s Court” was created in 1968

The 54-A District Court will celebrate its 50th anniversary with past and current judges, community leaders, court employees, and local citizens. 54-A joins district courts across Michigan that are marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of district courts in Michigan. As required by the 1963 Constitution, legislation took effect on June 17, 1968, creating district courts and abolishing justices of the peace and circuit court commissioners.

“District court is known as the people’s court because thousands of citizens interact with this court each year,” said Chief Judge Louise Alderson. Our team at 54-A is very proud of our service to citizens of Lansing and look forward to providing even better service in the years ahead.”

The celebration will take place on Wednesday, June 13, 2018 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm on the 6th floor of City Hall. Retired Judge Charles Filice will present historical information regarding 54-A along with a special presentation by the Ingham County Bar Foundation and 54-A Judges on the new photo gallery of current and former judges.

District courts handle a wide range of proceedings including traffic, lawsuits involving damages up to $25,000, landlord tenant, small claims, and criminal cases for which the maximum possible penalty does not exceed one year in jail. The district court also conducts preliminary examinations in felony cases, after which, if the prosecutor provides sufficient proofs, the felony case is transferred to the circuit court for trial.
