Overnight Parking Allowed with Permit

Mayor Andy Schor today announced that the City of Lansing’s parking ordinance number 404.13 has been amended to allow for overnight parking from 2:00 a.m. to 5:00 a.m. with a permit, effective March 1, 2020. Lansing residents may apply for an annual and/or temporary overnight parking permit through the City of Lansing’s Parking Office. Annual permits will be available for Lansing residents for $125 per vehicle, per year. Temporary permits will be available for non-Lansing residents, with the sponsorship of a Lansing resident, for $10 per night, up to 3 nights at a time.

“Many people want the ability to park overnight throughout Lansing, while others have concerns about possible congestion on our streets. The ordinance passed today is a compromise that will allow those with permits to park overnight. It will also provide a funding source to allow for overnight parking enforcement staff,” said Mayor Schor.

Annual and temporary permits can be suspended in the event of construction, emergencies, snow or other weather events. Permits are only valid if displayed correctly. Permits do not guarantee a parking spot. Permits are only for vehicles, not for boats, trailers, mobile homes, recreational vehicles, or any other vehicle with more than two axles.

Mayor Schor’s administration and members of City Council have had many conversations regarding updating the ordinance over the last two years, and City Council tonight passed the amended ordinance, effective March 1, 2020. The permit application process will be finalized in early 2020, with details forthcoming.
