Brian T. Jackson was elected to the Lansing City Council in November, 2017.

Brian T. Jackson was born and raised in Lansing, MI. Brian attended Sexton high school and participated in a variety of extracurricular activities, including, The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Board, Junior City Council and athletics. Brian graduated from Sexton in 2003 and attended Western Michigan University on a football scholarship.

As a student-athlete, Brian studied Political Science, played football and ran hurdles on the track and field team at WMU. In 2006, Brian transferred to Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Indiana, where he continued to run track and play football. In 2007, Brian graduated with a B.A. in Political Science. After graduation, Brian worked on his Master’s degree and played arena football for two seasons.

In 2009, Brian interned in the Indiana State legislature for State Senators Jim Arnold and Karen Tailian who represented districts in northwestern Indiana. After his legislative internship, Brian graduated with his M.A. degree in Criminology from Indiana State.

In 2010, Brian retired from football and transferred to Howard University School of Law in Washington D.C. where he focused on criminal law and social justice. He earned a spot on the nationally recognized Huver I. Brown Trial Advocacy team, participating in mock trials. He was also in the Criminal Justice Clinic where he represented indigent defendants in misdemeanor offenses and taught a “Know Your Rights During Police Encounters” class to local teenagers. Brian also interned at the Public Defender Service in Washington D.C. as well as the Public Defender office in Jacksonville, FL.

Brian became a licensed attorney and moved back to Lansing in 2013. He first worked as an assistant prosecutor in Eaton Co., and later as an assistant Lansing City Attorney. In 2016, Brian founded Jackson Law PLLC, a small law practice that focuses on criminal defense and family law matters.

Brian married his law school sweetheart, Arielle, in 2014. Together, they raise their children; daughter Brielle who was born in 2015 and son Elliott who was born in 2018. Brian is very active in the Lansing community:

  • Sexton H.S. Football and Track & Field- assistant coach.
  • Shabazz Public School Academy-School Board of Education, Vice-President
  • Volunteer Advocate of Mid-Michigan (V.A.M.M) represents area students during school suspension and expulsion hearings.
  • Kings and Queens chess club at Shabazz Academy- Founder/instructor
  • Uplift Our Youth- Board member
  • Davis-Dunnings Bar Association- Chair of Community Outreach Committee
  • Conducts “Know Your Rights” presentations for local schools and organizations
  • Antioch Church- member

Brian is honored to represent the people of Lansing’s Fourth Ward and excited to partner with the community to move Lansing forward.
