1. When will LFD be accepting applications again? Can I be placed on a contact list?

We publicize hiring application dates as soon as they are confirmed. Open job postings may viewed at the link below. Applications are only accepted during the period of time that the opening is posted for.

2. Are there any state or local residency requirements to apply?

No. However, the City of Lansing gives preference to qualified Lansing residents in hiring for all city employment.

3. What can I do to prepare for the application process?

To prepare, you may:
- Check you criminal history and driving record to ensure it is correct and up to date.
- Review the minimum qualifications listed on the job posting.
- Review the information for the Physical Ability Test.

4. Are there any volunteer firefighter opportunities at LFD?

No, but there may be opportunities at some of the region's other departments.

5. Do you have to be a US citizen to apply with LFD?

No. However you must be legally eligible to work in the United States.

6. If I was convicted of a felony, will this disqualify me from being hired by LFD?

Yes. A candidate must not have pending, or have been convicted of any felony charges and must be able to pass a criminal history record check.

7. What if I do not have a perfect driving record?

The following circumstances will be grounds for automatic disqualification for applicants for positions that require a driver’s license. In the last four years prior to placement in the position:
- The loss of driving privilege through suspension or revocation of license, due to an unsatisfactory driving record as defined by the Michigan Secretary of State driver’s license points system.
- Conviction of driving while license was suspended or revoked.
- Conviction of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Conviction of reckless driving two times.

In the last two years prior to placement in the position:
- A. The accumulation of eight points on driving record.
- B. Conviction of three traffic moving violations.

8. What are the age requirements for the position of Firefighter EMT?

A candidate must be at least 18 years of age or older.

9. How can I find out if a medical condition will disqualify me from being hired?

Medical evaluations are conducted at the end of the employment process for those who receive a conditional offer of hire. Reasonable accommodations will be provided, if necessary, for individuals with disabilities who can perform the essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodations. 10. When is the Written Assessment Test? Is there a fee?

Candidates will be notified if they meet the requirements to participate in the test. There is a testing fee of $50 and may be paid by certified check or money order made payable to the City of Lansing. This fee is due the date of the test at the testing location.

11. Are there any sample tests for the written assessment test?

12. Do I need to buy a book or study guide for the written exam?

No. The exam is a general aptitude test that measures Observation, Applied Math and Locating Information. Sample questions may be viewed at the ACT Website.

13. When is the Physical Ability Test? Is there a fee?

Candidates who are eligible to participate will be notified after successful completion of the written assessment test. The Physical Ability Test has a fee of $45 and may be paid by certified check or money order made payable to the City of Lansing. This fee is due the date of the test at the testing location.

14. What does the Physical Agility Test consist of?

The full physical ability test is a timed event consisting of eight evolutions, or exercises, which represent typical fire ground evolutions.

15. What if I have completed the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) previously?

Candidates that provide proof of CPAT certification date within 120 days of the Lansing Fire Department Ability Test may be exempt from this requirement.

16. Will I get paid while I’m in the Academy?

Yes. LFD trainees are considered full-time employees and receive pay with benefits. For more information, visit our Pay and Benefits Page.

17. I am already a certified firefighter or licensed EMT. Do I still need to attend the LFD Fire Academy?

Yes. Prior experience or training as either a Firefighter and/or EMT, while desirable, may be beneficial in many ways. However, Trainees are still required to attend our fire academy to learn City of Lansing policies and the Fire Department’s operating procedures.
